The Nigerian Energy Transition Plan - Realistic or Faux
I am optimistic that this plan will pave the way for a sustainable, prosperous, and greener Nigeria.
TSB: Tell us about you.
IHUOMA: I’m Chinonso Ihuoma, a passionate advocate for environmental sustainability and an experienced product manager. My focus revolves around developing innovative products to tackle climate change and improve living conditions sustainably. I hold a degree in transport management and technology from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State. I’m proud to lead Uoma Solutions, a climate tech company that utilizes community-driven solutions for inclusive economic prosperity and climate action in Africa. I’m committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions, expanding energy access, and ending hunger on the continent. I advocate for the inclusion of vulnerable groups and have participated in prestigious fellowship programs to further my impact in this field.
TSB: When did you get interested in renewable energy? And when and how did UOMA Solutions start?
IHUOMA: During the pandemic in 2020, while operating a small cold room for agro products, I experienced the drawbacks of relying on traditional electricity sources like NEPA. A significant loss of perishable goods due to a power outage sparked my interest in renewable energy. Determined to find a sustainable solution, I delved into researching solar and wind power. Inspired by their potential, I established a business focused on providing renewable energy solutions. Starting with residential solar installations in 2021, and we are still growing. Today, I take pride in promoting clean energy practices and pushing the boundaries of innovation in the renewable energy sector.
TSB: What do you think of Nigeria's Energy Transition plan?
IHUOMA: Nigeria’s Energy Transition plan marks an exciting leap towards a brighter future. As an energy entrepreneur, I view it with great enthusiasm. The plan’s focus on renewable energy, particularly solar power, reflects a progressive shift away from fossil fuels. Nigeria’s abundant solar resources provide a tremendous opportunity for clean energy generation and energy independence. To ensure success, the plan should prioritize supportive policies and incentives to attract private investments. Additionally, prioritizing universal access to electricity through decentralized renewable energy solutions will empower communities and drive inclusive growth. I am optimistic that this plan will pave the way for a sustainable, prosperous, and greener Nigeria.
TSB: Isn’t it a good opportunity for UOMA? Tell us about UOMA and how far it has come.
IHUOMA: Certainly! Considering Nigeria's Energy Transition plan presents an exceptional opportunity for UOMA to thrive. UOMA, driven by the desire to bring joy and enhance the quality of life, is perfectly aligned with the country's renewable energy goals. As the demand for clean energy solutions grows, UOMA is poised to make a significant impact. With our focus on innovative technologies, such as solar power and energy efficiency, we are well-positioned to contribute to Nigeria's energy transition. UOMA's journey thus far has been a testament to resilience, hard work, and unwavering determination. As we look ahead, we are confident that UOMA will continue to flourish in this promising era of renewable energy advancement.
TSB: The focus is on shifting from crude oil to Natural Gas. That doesn't seem to be a plus for your business. How do you plan to manage the situation? How's your product a better option?
IHUOMA: While the focus on shifting from crude oil to gas is a prominent aspect of the energy transition plan, it presents an opportunity rather than a setback for our business. At UOMA, we embrace the importance of a diversified energy mix. Our products offer a superior alternative through renewable energy solutions, particularly solar power. By harnessing the clean, abundant, and sustainable energy of the sun, we provide environmentally-friendly options. Our solutions promote energy independence, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, ensure long-term cost savings, and contribute to a greener and healthier planet. UOMA is poised to flourish as we champion the benefits of renewable energy and its positive impact on our future.
TSB: Another goal of the transition plan is to lift millions out of poverty. Do you think this is feasible in the next decade?
IHUOMA: Certainly! The government’s goal of lifting millions out of poverty through the energy transition plan is an audacious endeavor. Feasibility within the next decade hinges upon a collaborative partnership between the government and the private sector. UOMA, being deeply rooted in the needs of the people, holds a unique position to drive impactful change. By embracing the private sector’s innovative spirit and leveraging its resources, we can expand access to affordable energy, spur economic growth, and generate employment opportunities. To achieve this, fostering an enabling environment and strong public-private partnerships are essential. Together, we can transform lives and bring prosperity to communities across Nigeria.
TSB: You’re interested in Renewable energy-assisted technologies e.g. vehicles and smart agriculture. Do you think Nigerian farmers can afford to make that switch to renewable energy-powered technologies?
IHUOMA: Indeed, I believe Nigerian farmers can afford to make the switch to renewable energy-powered technologies, given the right support from the government and private sector. At UOMA, we recognize the importance of affordability and accessibility in driving adoption. That’s why we are actively developing a business model and platform that allows farmers, healthcare providers, and individuals to access renewable energy solutions through us. By leveraging economies of scale, strategic partnerships, and innovative financing options, we aim to make renewable energy technologies more affordable and attainable for Nigerian farmers. This approach will empower them to enhance productivity, reduce operating costs, and contribute to a more sustainable agricultural sector.
TSB: Just Transition has dual destinies of promoting the use of renewable energy in a way that is fair and inclusive of everyone, which summarises the marketing outlook of the Nigerian Energy Transition Plan. The average income of a Nigerian is pegged at 30,00 naira and it’s not a surprise that many people, especially in the private sector, still earn below that margin. Also, renewable energy isn’t affordable in these parts, yet. How will your solution help people with average income rates when they can’t even afford it?
IHUOMA: Indeed, the affordability of renewable energy remains a challenge for those below the average income level. However, at UOMA, we embrace this challenge as an opportunity for innovation. We are actively developing a creative solution to address this issue head-on. Our upcoming program will facilitate an effortless transition to renewable energy by introducing business models. Through strategic partnerships and a commitment to social impact, we aim to make renewable energy accessible and affordable for individuals with lower income rates. Our mission is to bring genuine smiles to people's faces, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the benefits of clean and sustainable energy, regardless of their economic circumstances.
TSB: Agriculture is a major contributor of Carbon Dioxide, Methane, and Nitrous Oxide. These greenhouse gases are the leading enablers of Climate Change. You’ve mentioned your interest in Smart Agriculture. Please tell us if this is a feasible solution to climate change in that sector and how?
IHUOMA: Certainly! Smart Agriculture offers a compelling and feasible solution to tackle climate change in the agricultural sector. By harnessing cutting-edge technologies and data-driven strategies, we can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable farming practices. Through precision irrigation, real-time monitoring, and climate-smart techniques, farmers can optimize resource usage, minimize chemical inputs, and enhance soil health. These actions not only mitigate greenhouse gas emissions but also improve agricultural productivity and resilience. UOMA plays a pivotal role in this transition by providing farmers with access to innovative technologies and knowledge transfer, empowering them to embrace climate-smart practices and contribute to a greener future for agriculture and the planet.
TSB: What’s a fun fact about you?
IHUOMA: Certainly! One fun fact about me is that I have a deep love for adventure and exploration. Whether it’s hiking through scenic trails, trying out new water sports, or embarking on road trips to discover hidden gems, I thrive on the excitement of venturing into the unknown. Exploring nature’s beauty and immersing myself in different cultures fuels my curiosity and inspires me to find innovative solutions for a sustainable future. Adventure brings out the best in me and keeps me motivated to make a positive impact in the world.
